Dr. Jimmy Steger takes a buck in velvet  - 9/22/09

Our second hunt of the season at World Class Whitetails was awesome. We started our day out with getting up early and hunting on top of some the big ridges at the ranch with our rifle. We sat the first morning observing what was moving through the bottoms and saw some really good bucks.  We were hunting for a big buck in velvet so we were very select with what we were looking for on this hunt.  World Class Whitetails has so many deer at their ranch this is a little easier to do than most ranches.  We hunted the entire day sitting and observing different ridges and had a great day seeing well over 75 good bucks.

The second day we got up way before, daylight and headed down into the woods trying to get set up on one of these ridges so we could head off these bucks going back to their bedding areas.  We saw a big buck in velvet crossing the road some 200 yards away with a group of bucks. We knew right off, this was the buck we wanted to try and take so we had to move from this point.  We moved up the ridge quickly trying to get a good look at him and get set up.  We saw him about 30 minutes later with the same group of bucks but he was in a thicket and could not get a shot on him.  Something spooked this group of deer and than ran off and there was know way of us knowing where he went.

Later that afternoon we were stalking a ridge top when I saw a big 10 pointer bedded down in a bottom next to the creek.  I laid down, and crawled about 20 feet closer, so I would not spook them and I could get a better view of him.  After watching this deer for 10-15 minutes, I noticed something move about 10 feet to the right of him.

It was that big buck in velvet.  He blended in so well with the bottom, I could not see him except with my binoculars.  I then noticed three other big bucks bedded down with all of them.  I watched this deer for over and hour but could not get a good look at him, so my cameraman and me moved around to the ridge he was bedded on.  I crawled over to the edge very carefully not to spook him or the other bucks, and there he was, about 70 yards away bedded with these other massive whitetails.  After watching them for 20 minutes or so, they started to get up and move up the other side of the ridge and I knew this might be our last chance to get a shot at this buck.  We ran to the other side of the ridge so we could get a clear shot at the field they were moving to.  Within 10 minutes they came bouncing across this big field and we had to make quick decision to shoot if he offered us a good shot.  He ran about 50 yards out into this field and I had to get up and move out in the field so I could get a clear shot at him.  He turned and looked back over his right shoulder and I shot.  What a rush! He ran off about 70 yards and dropped close to a small patch of trees.   I ran over and when I came up to him, I could not believe the mass and overall size of this buck.  Full velvet and mass all the way up the beams.  Super Buck, what a hunt!  Come and join us at World Class Whitetails of Ohio if you want to hunt a buck of a lifetime. We look forward to seeing you at the ranch!
